Blacksburg, Virginia- November 5, 2008.  Schultz-Creehan, LLC, a first time participant in the United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd (UWMRF), has determined to make a positive impact on the community by taking an active role as a member of the United Way’s “First and Goal” program.  “First and Goal” is a network of small businesses selected for their strong leadership to inspire other local companies to get involved in the community.

On October 6, 2008, Schultz-Creehan held a company campaign kickoff featuring guest speaker Sheri Parcell from the Children’s Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP) of the New River Valley.  Sheri discussed the importance of contributing to the United Way in order to provide critical funding for local programs such as CHIP which depend on these donations.  CHIP is a local, community-based charitable organization which assists low-income families with children and pregnant women with access to medical and dental services and acts as a link to other human service organizations/providers in the NRV.

At the conclusion of the kickoff, employees were given the opportunity to donate to the United Way through personal pledge forms.  An overwhelming 90% of full time employees contributed an extraordinary total of $1,985.

"Schultz-Creehan's support of our local community through the First & Goal program exemplifies positive, responsible business leadership, especially given the current economic unrest nationwide," said United Way Director of Community Resources Stephanie Graham. "Schultz-Creehan's management and employees understand that during economic downturns, the demand for help for the most vulnerable in our community increases. Schultz-Creehan's management and employees understand the condition of our local community affects us all - and rose to the challenge to help keep our community strong."

Schultz-Creehan did not stop there.  Over the two weeks following the kickoff, the company participated in the United Way’s “Food Chain Challenge”, an initiative to benefit the Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program (MCEAP) which serves as the main food pantry in Montgomery County, supplying food and essential items to families and individuals in need.  Schultz-Creehan decided to “challenge” the entire KnowledgeWorks Building at the Corporate Research Center of Virginia Tech in collecting the greatest number of donated items; the result was a success.

Schultz-Creehan hopes that the results of their United Way Campaign Kickoff and the Food Chain Challenge will encourage other businesses to get involved, demonstrating that even the smallest companies can make a difference.  Schultz-Creehan will continue to participate in United Way events throughout the year and serve as a business leader by providing support to the community.

The United Way of Montgomery, Radford, and Floyd is a non-profit organization which provides services, funding, and volunteers to the local community.  They work together with individuals and businesses in the area to help strengthen the local community by creating and supporting health and human services.
